Chromebooks are the next big things for the libraries now. Quite recently the “Palo Alto City Library” devised a new set of limited programs by which its patrons are allowed to borrow Chromebook devices having Google Chrome as their operating system. Other libraries like “Multnomah County Library” of Portland are also planning to have similar programs.

The advantage of having Google laptop is that they are light in weight and can easily be carried from place to place. Laptops nowadays are also easy to be taken as loan and they are getting cheaper day by day. Chromebooks are easy to use too. These Google laptops are constantly upgraded with the latest updates of Google and are thus more useful and handy.

There has been a concern among people who are not well acquainted with the new Chromebook, that it might not be effective enough when one is not online. However, Google has taken care of the situation, as everything on the Google laptop can be accessed offline, and would be automatically synched up whenever it is next connected to the Internet. It is true that Chrome laptops are dependent on the Internet and Cloud in specific, but it can operate efficiently without the Internet as well.

The “Missouri River Regional Library” switched over to Google Apps from Microsoft Office for their education. Google applications are also being used by the abovementioned institutions. The county calculated the estimated save to be around six hundred thousand dollars each year. Several other governments have switched to Google Apps in the last few years.

However, the “Los Angeles Public Library” is till date the largest organization to switch to Google and its applications. The library now exclusively uses Gmail; Google Docs are used by the employees of the library although they still provide you with the option to use MS Word. The majority of the employees of the Los Angeles city are using Google Apps as well. Google released the “Google Apps for Government” which will respond and fulfill the high security needs of the departments in the recent future.

What about the Word Processing in the Chrome Laptop?

There is a popular misconception that word processing, which is a stronghold of systems running on the Microsoft operating systems, is not possible in Google Apps. Google Docs – the first online word processing suite, is a very useful tool in this regard as it can work on almost any file extension and perform word processing on them.

This misconception has led many organizations to completely own the Chrome laptop drive and its apps, but it is slowly changing considering the fact that Google has tied up with central organizations and is reaching out the general public to educate them about the new kind of laptop.
